iPod Classic Rockbox Sync Guide

Complete operational guide for synchronizing music from your homelab server (/srv/storage/media/music) to an Apple iPod Classic running Rockbox open-source firmware.

1. Why Rockbox Changes Everything

Standard Apple stock firmware requires iTunes or libgpod to maintain a proprietary database (iTunesDB). In contrast, Rockbox transforms your iPod into a standard USB Mass Storage device (flash drive):

  • Direct Filesystem Access: Drag-and-drop audio directly into folders. No iTunes, no syncing lock-in.
  • Native Audiophile Codec Support: Plays FLAC, MP3, AAC, ALAC, Opus, Ogg Vorbis, and WAV natively without transcoding.
  • Tag & Folder Browsing: Reads ID3v2.4 and Vorbis tags on the fly, or allows folder navigation directly matching the server's structure.
  • Automated Canonical Structure: Because our ingestion pipeline (pipeline/router.py) organizes music into Artist/Album/01 - Track.ext, your iPod mirrors your server's library 1:1.

2. Synchronization Methods

    Laptop -->|USB 30-Pin Cable| iPod

The fastest and most reliable way to sync your music collection. Connect your iPod to your laptop via USB (it will mount as a drive, e.g. /media/$USER/IPOD on Linux or /Volumes/IPOD on macOS).

Run from your laptop terminal:

# Sync entire music library incrementally:
rsync -avh --progress dev@homelab:/srv/storage/media/music/ /media/$USER/IPOD/Music/

Selective Syncing

To sync only a specific artist or album:

# Sync specific artist:
rsync -avh --progress dev@homelab:/srv/storage/media/music/"Pink Floyd"/ /media/$USER/IPOD/Music/"Pink Floyd"/

Why rsync is the Best Choice:

  • Delta Transfers: Skips tracks already present on the iPod. Syncing 10 new tracks into a 60GB library takes seconds.
  • Resumable: If a cable disconnects mid-transfer, running the command again picks up cleanly without re-copying finished files.

Method 2: GUI Drag-and-Drop via SFTP

If you prefer a visual interface without downloading files onto your laptop's hard drive:

  1. Connect your iPod via USB and open its Music/ folder in your file manager.
  2. In a second window, open an SFTP connection to the server:
  3. Linux (GNOME Files / Nautilus): Press Ctrl + L and enter:
    sftp://dev@homelab/srv/storage/media/music

  4. macOS (Finder): Press Cmd + K and enter sftp://dev@homelab.
  5. Drag and drop artist or album folders directly from the server window into the iPod window. Files stream across Wi-Fi straight to the iPod.

Method 3: Subsonic Playlist Syncing (Strawberry Music Player)

If you create playlists in Navidrome and want to sync playlists rather than raw directory trees:

  1. Install Strawberry Music Player (Linux/macOS/Windows).
  2. Go to Settings → Subsonic and enter your Navidrome server URL (http://homelab:4533) and credentials.
  3. Plug in your iPod. Strawberry will detect it as a mass storage device.
  4. Right-click any playlist or album → Send to device → iPod.
  5. (Optional) Configure on-the-fly transcoding if you want Strawberry to convert FLAC files to 320k MP3/Opus to save disk space.

3. Storage & Hardware Considerations

FLAC vs. Battery Life

  • iFlash SD-Modded iPods (128GB–512GB+):
  • Keep Lossless FLAC: Flash storage draws minimal power. Rockbox decodes FLAC effortlessly without noticeable battery drain.
  • Original Mechanical Spinning Disks (30GB, 80GB, 160GB):
  • Consider 320k MP3 or Opus: Larger FLAC files (~30–40 MB per song) require the mechanical hard drive to spin up more frequently to refill the RAM buffer cache, reducing battery life by 20–30%.

Cover Artwork

  • Our media pipeline saves cover.jpg inside every album directory and embeds ID3 front cover tags.
  • Rockbox automatically renders cover.jpg on the Now Playing screen.
  • Optimal image resolution for the iPod Classic color screen is 300x300 to 500x500 pixels.

4. Post-Sync Actions on iPod

After disconnecting the USB cable:

  1. Safely Eject: Always unmount/eject the iPod from your laptop before unplugging the 30-pin cable to avoid filesystem corruption.
  2. Update Rockbox Database:
  3. Navigate to Settings → General Settings → Manage Database.
  4. Select Auto Update (or Initialize Database Now for a clean rebuild).
  5. Rockbox will scan all ID3 tags in the background in under 60 seconds.
